Our focus on creating space for community has always been at the core of our plans while building our new Black arts-centered space in the heart of the historic Central District community. It is a historic location and nothing less than a space that celebrates the legacy of connections would do.
Those of us with roots in Seattle are not unfamiliar with the ways in which this corner has changed over the years. But we remember the post office, The Mecca, the laundromat that Jesse and Lottie Cross operated for years, Dell Durden's insurance company, Thompson's Point of View, Ms. Helen's, and of course Liberty Bank. With these precious memories held close to our hearts, we are truly honored when ARTE NOIR and Gallery Onyx visitors share their thoughts about how we are serving to create community, especially in the Black community where pieces of this history and legacy have been slowly stripped away over the past 20+ years.
Our hearts were truly touched by the outpouring of love we received:
"ARTE NOIR is one of a kind - true support for Black artists. You don't want to miss this gem in Seattle's Central District."
"Thanks to Earnie Thomas for the long-time amazing work that he has been doing with Onyx Black Artist Collective. This is really putting a long-time existing Black arts community on the map."
"What a treasure for our community."
"Thank you for what you have done for our community, the culture, the art world and the world."
“Definitely shopping at that fabulously curated shop.”
Thank you to everyone for all of the support and encouragement you have provided in this nascent time. If the saying, "start how you want to finish," has any significance, know that this start to ARTE NOIR's presence in the community is exactly how we want to continue. Thank you!
SINCERE THANKS TO THE COMMUNITY THAT HELPED US GET HERE!!!
